Chlorine dioxide gas (CD gas) is the most effective method of decontamination available. It offers the ability to reach and eliminate all organisms within a space, even in hard to reach areas and harbor locations. As a true gas, CD gas fills the area it is introduced into evenly and completely, ensuring that all surfaces receive an equal dose and equal kill level. The CD gas molecule is smaller than all microorganisms, so there are no crevices or harbor locations where microorganisms would be protected from CD gas.


The Food Industry has been using CD gas for the decontamination of facilities, tanks, rooms, laboratories, piping systems, spiral freezers, containers, cargo trailers, and tented pieces of equipment for many years. As a residue free process, CD gas is safe for use on food contact surfaces and is even on the National Organic Program's List of Approved and Prohibited Substances as an approved substance for use on organic foods. ClorDiSys has also been approved by the FDA for antimicrobial fruit and vegetable rinses in both the gaseous (Food Food Contact Notice 1421) and liquid (Food Contact Notice 1400) states with more approvals in the works now.

As the food safety industry continues to improve its environmental monitoring and sampling methods, higher level decontamination methods will be needed to eliminate the persistant contaminations that are found. Advances in environmental monitoring and microbial sampling have been able to bring to light the shortcomings of the sanitation methods being used within the food industry. PFGE is used to create a DNA fingerprint of pathogens causing an outbreak, which can be used to trace the contamination back to its source. This technology can also show recurrence of contamination within a facility, which the FDA has shown itself to be more critical of. Current sanitation methods involving sprays, fogs, mists, and washdowns are limited in their ability to reach all surfaces, which can lead to organisms surviving the treatment and recontaminating in the future. In order to keep up with the advances in environmental monitoring, sanitation programs must evolve as well to mitigate the increased liability that FSMA is creating for food manufacturers. CD gas has all advantages necessary to provide the "deep clean" needed to preserve food safety and reduce your risk of contamination.

Spiral Freezers can be completely decontaminated with chlorine dioxide gas. The limited accessibility which hinders standard cleaning methods does not affect the gas' ability to naturally distribute and contact all surfaces within the chamber. Chlorine dioxide gas is able to decontaminate the crevices, nooks, crannies, and conveyors within the spiral freezer, allowing for the most effective decontamination possible. Decontamination of tanks and vessels is made easy with chlorine dioxide gas. Many tanks and vessels are decontaminated after every batch to ensure sterility for the next batch.
