Since the use of chlorine dioxide to sterilize medical devices is fairly new, the acceptable levels of ClO₂ residue left on medical devices after the sterilization process has never been defined. The following study was carried out in order to determine how much (if any) ClO₂ residue is present subsequent to a ClO₂ sterilization cycle.
